"Car model letters and numbers"

             Friends,many luxury car companies have given up on naming their cars altogether, preferring alpha-numeric nomenclature systems that take the guesswork and focus groups out of deciding what to call a new model.

"It's only the luxury brands that have the luxury of using alphanumeric,"
                                                  -Jim Singer, president , a marketing company that has    helped create names for some Kia, Suzuki and Renault cars.

"The implication: a flashy car can sell itself"

But an opposite side some say that,"You're missing a huge opportunity to communicate more about the vehicle"

Is it fast? Is it rugged? Is it big and comfy? Who knows?

They really do have meaning.
lets see...

These are general rules, by the way, and there are some exceptions.

                                                                         1.BMW

EXPLANATION:

              BMW's numbering system is fairly simple. Numbers, usually odd numbers, indicate the relative size and expense of cars. Everyone has heard of BMW's 3-series, 5-series and 7 series cars.

The next two digits indicate engine size.
 BMW 325i has a 2.5 liter engine.
 BMW 330i has a 3.0 liter engine.

The letter i is a holdover from times when fuel injection was something to brag about rather than something you would find in even run-of-the-mill economy cars.

In Europe, where BMW sells diesel-powered cars, one can also see the 325d on the road.

Sometimes two letters appear after the number, as in the 325Ci and 325Xi.
The first letter indicates a special type, as with the two-door 325Ci coupe or the all-wheel drive 325Xi.

Some Examples:

BMW 325i-BMW 3 Series with a 2.5L engine. (i)Base Version.
BMW 330xi-BMW 3 series with a 3.0L engine. (xi)AWD
BMW 328i-BMW 3 series with a 2.8L engine.
BMW 535i-BMW 5 series with 3.5L engine
BMW 747i-BMW 7 series with 4.5L engine.
BMW 745Li-BMW 7 series with a 4.5L engine. More luxury.

2.Lexus

EXPLANATION:

Let's take, for example,
The Lexus LS 430.
The second letter in any Lexus car's name indicates the body style.

An S is a sedan, an X is a sport/utility vehicle and a C is a convertible.

The 3-digit number is based on the engine size in liters.
So the LS 430 has a 4.3 liter engine,
and a GS 300 has a 3.0 liter engine.

The first letter in a Lexus name indicates the relative size and cost of the car.
The higher in the alphabet the letter is, the higher the price. For some reason - a Toyota spokesman wasn't sure why -- the R SUVs are an exception to this particular rule. They are actually the least expensive Lexus SUVs.

Some more Examples:

Lexus IS300-3.0L engine(IS is smallest model. Just a name.)
Lexus IS350-3.5L engine
Lexus RX400-4.0L engine
Lexus GS400-4.0L engine
With Lexus, everything that ends with S such as LS, GS, IS, and ES are cars and "X" means SUV like RX and GX.

3.Mercedes

EXPLANATION:

The letters in front of Mercedes car names, like E320,
Indicate the "class." Sedans are C, for the least expensive, E or S, for the most expensive. SUVs are M or the more exclusive G. Convertibles are, in order of expense, the SLK, CLK and SL.

The three numbers indicate engine size. An E320 has a 3.2 liter engine, for example.

For example, an S500 and an S600 are the same model car (class S) but the engine is 1 liter bigger (5.0 liters vs. 6.0 liters).
The S is the large sedan, the SL is the large coupe. Same thing with the C and CL… L stands for coupe.A CL550 is a big coupe, but a CL550L would theoretically be a long-wheelbase (stretched) CL550.
Car classes go from small (A, like the tiny A190) to large (S, like the huge S550). If you look at Mercedes’ cars, you notice the smallest cars start with the A and the biggest have the S.
Of course, Mercedes makes this more confusing by overlapping all the letters and the fact that it changed its naming style in 1994.
Sedans come in three classes: C, E, and S (smallest to largest)
Convertibles come in three classes: CLK, SLK, and SL (I think K stands for compact)
Coupes come in four classes: CLK, CLS, CL, and SLR.
The meaning of C,CL,CLK,SL may be this:
C = Coupe
CL = Coupe Light (light, because in Europe MB makes big rigs)
CLK = Coupe Light Short (k = kurtz, German for Short)
SL = Sports Light
SLK = Sports Light Short
G = Gelandewagon
CLS = Coupe Light Sport.

4.Acura

EXPLANATION:

        Acura's two- and three-letter combinations mean absolutely nothing. They're just completely made-up combinations of letters.
One exception that rule -- or lack of one -- predates Acura's overall move to letters. When the Acura NSX sports car was in development in the 1980s that name stood for New Sports Experimental.

Acura TR - Acura, model name TR (no meaning to TR).
Acura RSX Type S-Sport. The RSX, TSX, and TL and MDX and RDX does not stand for anything in Acura's.
Type R-Race

Here are some another cars model name Explanation:
