Description of Layman terms

You must have been coming across these words quite frequently but what do they mean exactly? Here is a description in layman terms.

Sedan :
It is a passenger car with a 3 box configuration. Imagine it as 3 boxes put side by side. First box for engine called the hood, second box for passengers and third box for luggage called the trunk. The rear window does not open when you access the trunk. Eg - Honda Civic, Toyota corolla.

Hatchback
If you combine the last two boxes (passenger and trunk), the car becomes a hatchback. The rear window will open if you access the trunk. eg - Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20.

Station Wagon
It a a variant of a sedan with its roof extended backward and fused with the trunk making it a two box design. It differs from a hatchback as it has four pillars instead of three, in other words, 3 windows instead of 2 in sedan/hatchback. Eg - Toyota innova, Chevy Tavera.

SUV
Sports Utility Vehicle(SUV) is similar to a station wagon but having a stronger chassis, higher engine capacity, 4 wheel drive option and can be used off-road.However, not all SUVs have four-wheel drive capabilities.Conversely, not all four-wheel-drive passenger vehicles are SUVs. Eg - Toyota fortuner, Audi Q7.

Coupe : Its basically a 2 door sedan with longer doors and a smaller rear passenger area.

Cabriolet : Another term for convertible.

Crossover : A vehicle that blends the features of a SUV and a regular car. Eg - Tata Aria

Roadster : A two seater convertible sports car. Eg - BMW Z4.

Tourer
generally used of station wagons car models. Eg - BMW 5 series Gran Tourismo.
